Investing 101 is an interactive program providing participants with the foundational skills in investing. Firstly, the program will begin with the basics, teaching the knowledge and skills needed to create and manage an investment portfolio. We will discuss private companies vs. public companies, and why the public stock market exists. We will explore how different investment markets function, how global events impact the investment environment, and how stocks in different industries and economies react to macro events. Participants will learn at a basic level how to utilize different forms of stock valuation analysis (fundamental, technical and quantitative) to better understand the value of a stock and whether it is a"buy" opportunity. They will then learn the importance of portfolio diversification. Once each participant has learned these foundational skills, they will have the opportunity to build their own mock investment portfolio and compete against course mates in a friendly investment competition to see who can make the most money! As part of this course, we will also introduce the different investment accounts types in Canada such as a Tax Free Saving Account (TFSA), Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) and a Non-Registered Account. Basic investment knowledge, secondary school accounting or economics courses are considered an asset but not a requirement
